Street Knight and Sumo Wrestler Meeting at a Tea Stand, 1840

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Koi zumo yawaragi Soga" of an otokodate or street knight and a sumo wrestler encountering each other at a tea stand. At left, Yokichi leans forward with a smile, lifting his robe with one hand, a pipe in the other. The beauty Keishiya grins back at him as she tucks a rolls of tissues into her obi. At right, the wrestler Shirafuji Genta stares at Yokichi with an angry frown. He wears an intricately patterned tie-dyed blue kimono, tied with a green floral obi fastened with a narrow red and white dotted sash. Lanterns with writing and circular crests are clustered overhead, and two tea cups rest atop the bench at right. A great design with expressive figures and an interesting setting.
