Tametomo's Ferocity Drives away the Smallpox Demons, No. 9 - Dramatic image of the warrior Minamoto no Tametomo driving away smallpox demons with his stern stance. The legendary Tametomo was known as a powerful archer and fought during the Hogen Rebellion, but after being defeated he was exiled to an island. He conquered the island for himself, so the emperor sent a fleet to capture and punish him. After supposedly sinking an entire Taira ship with a single arrow, he committed suicide rather than be captured. According to one story, he didn't die, but escaped to Okinawa, becoming ruler there. He effectively chased away smallpox demons when they threatened the islanders by persuading them to leave. Yoshitoshi depicts the moment when the demons decide to flee in the face of Tametomo's reasoning. He wears a fine suit of armor with a lion on the chest plate, gripping a bow in one hand. The demons scatter in alarm, an older one carrying a young demon covered with red spots on its back. An interesting depiction of this fierce hero, detailed with touches of burnishing in the armor and soft shading in the night sky.
