The Nun Seigen, 1847 - Terrific scene from a tragic kabuki play about Princess Hanako, who becomes a nun after learning that her fiance, Matsuwakamaru, has died. She goes crazy after her sister, Princess Sakura, becomes engaged to a man who looks just like her fiance (and in fact, is, disguised as the nobleman Yorikuni). Reduced to begging, the deranged Seigen is shown wearing a tattered robe as she rides in a ferry poled by the villainous boatman Sota. In another boat at left, Matsuwakamara, in disguise as Yorikuni, uses a fishing net to retrieve Sakura's kimono from the river. Red flames rise from the fire basket extending over the end of the boat, grimacing as he looks down, realizing that the nun holds the sleeve of the robe. The white blossoms of cherry trees dot the opposite shore among the dark silhouettes of trees under the evening sky. The actors include Sawamura Chojuro V as Yoshida Matsuwakamaru and Onoe Kikugoro III as Sarushima Sota. An interesting design we've never before offered, with expressive figures and a handsome setting.
