Original Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825) Japanese Woodblock Print
Clerk with a Carp Scroll, 1824

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring from left Seki Sanjuro as the clerk Shohachi, Onoe Kikugoro, and Segawa Kikunojo. Shohachi looks up from one knee as he holds a precious scroll depicting a carp leaping up a river. The young man in the center stares back at him with a worried frown, while the beauty at left watches him suspiciously out of the corners or her eyes, her mouth slightly agape. The grassy slope behind them is topped with tall plants bearing spiky yellow flowers. A handsome design by Toyokuni I with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. A couple small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and small spots, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
