A New Translations of the Tale of Genji - Beautiful illustration by Hiromitsu Nakazawa for "A New Translation of the Tale of Genji" (Shin'yaku Genji monagatari) by Yosano Akiko, the first translation of this classic novel into modern Japanese. Published in four volumes between 1912 - 1913 by Kanao Bun'endo, the story follows the hero, the young Prince Genji, through his love affairs and interactions with elegant women of the upper class. These gorgeous designs recreate the drama of the tale, depicting Genji and his companions in striking and significant moments from the story. Although depicting traditional subjects, Nakazawa's designs reflect the modern sensibilities of the shin-hanga or new print movement that emerged in Japan in the early 20th century. Printed in soft colors, these works have a lovely painterly feel similar to watercolor. These lyrical and atmospheric scenes are beautifully drawn with fine delicate line work and wonderful detail. A rare, pre-Kanto Earthquake shin-hanga print and a great choice for a collector.
