Series; Legend of the Loyal Retainers, One by One, 1864

Biography of the Loyal Retainers, One by One - Terrific portrait of one of the famous 47 Ronin from a series of chuban size woodblocks by Yoshitora, designed in 1864. These lively images portray the samurai in a variety of poses both before and after night attack at Lord Moronao's castle. Several warriors wear the traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robe of the ronin, with delicate embossing on the white portions. Armor and weapons are carefully detailed, and the faces are expressively rendered. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this series in its collection. A handsome design and a nice choice for samurai enthusiast interested in this legendary tale.
