Onoe Kikugoro as Tamaya Shinbei and Seki Sanjuro as Kujuro, 1824

Comments - Great kabuki scene of a commoner and a samurai in the pouring rain, the raindrops sending up splashes as they hit the ground. At left, Shinbei, who is a "tamaya" or peddler of soap bubbles, stares to the side with an alarmed expression, an umbrella in his hand. He wears a light green outer kimono patterned with blossoms and leaves over a red under robe with a blossom print, the robes tucked up at his back, At right, the samurai Kujuro glares angrily behind him, his two swords at his side. A terrific atmospheric design with wonderful detail and expressive figures.

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 19 3/8"
