Higuchi Jiro Kanemitsu, 1851

Comments - Fantastic scene of the boatman Matsuemon perched in a rugged pine tree overlooking the ocean. Matsuemon is actually the great warrior Higuchi no Jiro Kanemitsu, a retainer of the twelfth century Minamoto warrior Yoshinaka. After his Yoshinaka's death, Higuchi rescued his master's son and escaped disguised as a sailor. Here, the boatman uses the tree as a lookout, scowling unhappily as he spies Genji troops are coming after him. A great dramatic portrait with a terrific setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight soiling, a few creases and spots, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
