Original Ide Gakusui (1899 - 1982) Japanese Woodblock Print
Japanese Ivy and Titmouse, 1949

Ide Gakusui - Gakusui studied Japanese-style painting, and lived in China during the 1930s. After World War II ended, he returned to Japan and began designing kacho-e (birds and flowers prints) for Watanabe in the late 1940s. His realistic works are beautifully rendered.

Comments - Charming kacho-e or birds and flowers print of a titmouse perched on the broken branch of a tree covered with Japanese ivy. The bird looks to the side with a keen expression, the white breast feathers nicely detailed with embossing. The leaves of the vine wind about the tree, rendered in rich autumn tones of red yellow and green. A lovely image with soft bokashi shading in the background.

Publisher - Watanabe, with 7 mm seal, later edition from original blocks

Artist - Ide Gakusui (1899 - 1982)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few creases at edge. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
