Sharaku (active 1794 - 1795) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Portrait of Shinozuka Uraemon, Manager of the Miyako-za Theater

Comments - Terrific Sharaku portrait of Shinozuka Uraemon, the backstage manager of the Miyako-za Theater making an announcement, reading from a scroll he holds before him. The writing on the scroll appears in reverse, as if seen through the thin paper, and instead of an actual theater announcement, it announces a new group of 28 portrait prints by Sharaku, a clever advertising device. He wears a rust colored kamishimo with a repeated pattern of the character for longevity. A terrific design with a beautiful shimmering mica background and a dusting of metallic flecks that has oxidized to a dark tone.

Artist - Sharaku (active 1794 - 1795)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning, a few small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
