Series; Gekko's Essays

Gekko's Essays - Begun in 1886, "Gekko's Essays" (Zuihitsu) is a wonderful series encompassing a wide range of subjects. Gekko depicts figures from history and mythology, including famous beauties, poets, scholars, and warriors, along with a few supernatural creatures. These handsome designs are rendered in Gekko's distinctive painterly style, with soft washes of color and flowing calligraphic line work, expertly printed by Matsuki Heikichi to capture these qualities. The series was completed by 1887, but woodblocks are found with dates up to 1899, proving the popularity of the designs, which continued to be printed. A great choice to collect or display.

The Rat and Cat of Kuroishi - Fantastic scene from a folktale about a very faithful cat, which followed an old man's daughter everyone. The father was concerned that the tom cat might be in love with his daughter and about to cast a spell over her, so he decided that he must kill the cat. The cat overheard his plans, and spoke to him, telling him that a giant rat was in love with his daughter, and he was protecting her from being carried off by the rat. That night, the cat battled the enormous rat, which was almost as large as he was. The fight awakened the household, which rushed to the cat's aid, slitting the rat's throat, but the cat died from its wounds and was buried with honor in the local temple. Here, the animals are locked in fierce combat, the rat attempting to bite the cat's throat as it sprawls on its back. A dramatic image drawn with a lively expressive line. Note the unusual table in the inset, which features animal legs. An intriguing subject.
