Series; Famous Sites of Nikko

Hannya and Hoto Waterfalls, 1891 - Striking image of travelers stopping to admire the autumn color in Nikko, with Hoto and Hannya waterfalls rushing down the mountainside into Lake Chuzenji. Two hikers pause at the edge of the hill at left, one smoking a pipe as the other leans on his walking stick. An elegantly dressed beauty stands in the center holding an umbrella as her companion climbs out of a palanquin at right. A waitress from the tea stand carries over cups of tea to offer the women. The foliage covering the hills is shaded in colorful tones. A great subject, beautifully detailed, with an interesting contrast in the clothing of the upper-class beauties and the more modestly attired workers and hikers. This image appears on page 172 of Bruce A. Coats's book "Chikanobu: Images of Modernity and Nostalgia."
