Series; The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers

The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers - Handsome design from a Meiji era series depicting the 47 ronin from the famous drama "Kanadehon Chushingura." The designs show the samurai during the night attack on Lord Moronao's mansion, in bold poses against the shadowy silhouettes of warriors fighting in the landscape behind them. The colorful, expressive figures contrast nicely with the muted grays of the background, focusing all attention on the individual. Beautiful printed with crisp line work and burnishing and delicate cloth embossing on the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robes. Each image also features hand-applied white pigment to simulate the snow on the ground. A great series we've never before come across.

Artist - Kuniteru III (active circa 1880 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 1/8" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Vertical fold at right edge. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
