Lady-in-Waiting Committing Suicide, 1851

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Hama no Masago Tsukinu Gohiiki" of the nobleman Mashiba Hisatsugu discovering the lady-in-waiting Ishida committing suicide. The matron looks up with an awful grimace as she plunges the knife into her belly. Behind her, a flowing red wig topped with a dragon figurine lies on the floor. Hisatsugu leans forward with a frown, his brows furrowed. He wears a heavy outer robe with a pleated collar and holds a fan. The panels lining the back of the room feature a pine tree and bamboo leaves. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ebizo V as Ishida no Tsubone and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. An unusual subject with wonderful detail in the intricate dragon.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 20 1/8"
