Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Princess Tamaori and the Priest Rensho, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Princess Tamaori smiling as she watches two children dancing about, the boy and girl raising their sleeves above their heads, behind her, a scroll with a portrait of a young man hangs above a small altar with an incense burner and a flowering cherry branch in a vase. In the center the priest Rensho of Yase scowls angrily as he looks on. Rensho is the Buddhist name for the warrior Kumagai Jiro Naozane, who became a monk in later life. At left, a samurai stands in doorway holding a parcel wrapped in cloth in his outstretched hand. The room opens onto a fence garden with a view of mountains framed by blossoming cherry trees. An intriguing image with a wonderfully detailed setting. Include burnishing on Rensho's black robe and the black details on his hat.
