Male Geisha Dancing, 1864

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene which features two male geisha (Otoko geisha) performing a dance as a female geisha watches. At left, Arinaka hops on one foot as he waves two folding fans in each hand, one behind his back. At right, Shinko also lifts his foot as he strikes a pose with a fan in one hand, and a small box with a drawer trailing white ribbon in the other. Standing behind the smiling beauty, a commoner carrying a shakujou, a staff topped with a ringed final carried by Buddhist monks and pilgrims, watches the performance with a worried frown. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Iwai Shijaku II (formerly Kumesaburo) III as the geisha, Matsumoto Kinsho, and Bando Hikosaburo V. A fascinating subject with a wonderfully detailed setting, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
