The House of the Golden Vase in the New Yoshiwara, 1871

Comments - Terrific illustration of courtesans at the Kinpeiro of House of the Golden Vase in the New Yoshiwara enjoying a moment of leisure, entertaining themselves with music. At right, a beauty plays the koto, a songbook spread out on the carpet before her. The beauty kneeling at left plays a kokyu, a small instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. The other women smile happily as they enjoy the music. Cherry trees bloom outside the window, and cherry branches are arranged in a vase in a scroll niche at far left. Wonderful detail in the interior furnishings and colorful fabrics, with delicate embossing on the white kimono collars. A charming scene.
