Original Hasui (1883 - 1957) Japanese Woodblock Print
Evening View of a Village, circa 1930s

Hasui's Postcard Prints - Known for his more than 600 full oban size prints, Kawase Hasui also created smaller works as well, which are collectively known as Hasui's "postcard" prints. They were created for a variety of uses, including as book and magazine illustrations and calendars. During the 1930s, the publisher Watanabe commissioned many smaller format designs, producing them in three different sizes: otavo (about 85 x 130 mm), postcard (about 85 x 156 mm), and koban (about 115 x 177 mm). Some are smaller versions of existing prints while others are new compositions. The publisher Bijutsusha also produced postcard size versions of their Hasui prints. Most are unsigned, with only a red Hasui artist's seal, and they usually do not have a publisher's seal or date. These postcard prints feature the same attention to detail as Hasui's larger works, with beautiful atmospheric compositions and soft bokashi shading. A great opportunity to acquire an original Hasui.
