Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from Act 10 of the famous play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Here, disguised as guards, the ronin have paid a surprise visit to the Amakawaya Shop owned by Gihei to test his loyalty. Gihei has been entrusted to store weapons for the night attack on Moronao's palace, and he refuses to give up the location, even when one of the samurai threatens to kill his young son. In the center, Gihei sits atop a large woven chest, which houses the weapons, his arms firmly folded across his chest, an angry frown on his face. At bottom center, a samurai holds the struggling child, gripping his sword in his other hand. At right, the leader of the ronin, Oboshi Yuranosuke watches soberly while at lower left, Gihei's wife reacts with alarm. the room opens onto a canal lined with warehouses. A lively, colorful design with expressive figures, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black collar and the black kimono.
