Mamushi Jirokichi Attacking Yohei, 1864

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the rogue Mamushi Jirokichi, whose name cartouche includes "Akumono" or "Bad Guy," threatening Yohei, the son-in-law of a furniture store owner. He points a large knife at him, scowling angrily as Yohei scrambles backwards, throwing one hand out in a defensive position. At right, Yohei's wife Okame grins happily, but raises her sleeve to hide her face as she kneels beside a low folding screen. Red flames rage from a fire of pine branches in a floor hearth, and the room is shabby with cracked and missing plaster and writing on the shoji windows at upper right. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Yohei, Bandô Hikosaburo, and Iwai Shijaku II. A great scene from the play "Mukashi-banashi Homare Soga," beautifully detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on Yohei's black kimono and embossing on Jirokichi's white loincloth.
