Priest Refusing to Recognize His Son

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait showing the young boy Kato Ishidomaru meeting his father, who has become the priest Karukaya Doshin. His father was a daimyo who fled his station and title and became a priest to escape his jealous wife. His son searched for him, finally identifying him by a birthmark, but the man refused to admit his true identity. Here Doshin looks down at his son, frowning soberly, a string of prayer beads peeking from beneath his sleeve. The young boy looks up at him with a happy smile, urging him to accept a letter he has written. A moving scene from this popular kabuki story, with delicate embossing on the white kimono collar and attractive color.
