Series; Modern Parodies of Genji
Wakamurasaki, Chapter 5: Hanakawado Sukeroku, 1864 - Terrific scene of the otokodate or street knight Hanakawado Sukeroku bursting up out of a large wooden tub of water, holding a pail above his head as water streams over the edges of the barrel. He looks up with a tight-lipped frown as a beauty hurries away into the night, seen only in dark silhouette. Sukeroku wears a white robe shaded in pale blue, his long wet hair flowing over his shoulders, a narrow blue sash knotted about his forehead. A great dramatic subject, detailed with faint embossing on the white robe and soft bokashi shading in the background.
