Yamaoka Tesshu Rides from Edo to Meet Saigo Takamori in the Boshin War, 1891

Comments - Dramatic scene of Yamaoka Tesshu, one of the Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu's elite group of bodyguards, riding from Edo to meet with Saigo Takamori, the head of Imperial forces, to negotiate a peace conference during the Boshin War. From 1868 to 1869, forces loyal to the shogunate fought against Imperial troops and those in favor of the Meiji restoration during this Japanese civil war. During his meeting with Saigo, Yamaoka was able to arrange a meeting with Saigo and Katsu Kaishu, leading to the surrender of Edo Castle to Imperial troops. Here, he gallops along on his important mission, a sober expression on his face, his robes flying behind him in the wind. Another samurai follows on a white horse. The silhouettes of rooftops can seen in the distance at left. A bold image, nicely detailed with burnishing on Yamaoka's black lacquer hat, coat collar, and stirrups. A great subject for a student of history.
