Commotion beside a Palanquin, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a commotion taking place beside a palanquin. At right, a servant falls to his knee with a scroll box in his hand, raising his sleeve above his head to hide his face. A beauty climbs out of the palanquin, holding a lantern high to see what is going on. Wooden posts top the grassy slope above a stone retaining wall behind the figures, and two black birds swoop through the night sky. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Small losses and thinning at corner, repaired with backing. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
