Onchi Sakon Mitsukazu, 1853

Series; Six Select Heroes

Onchi Sakon Mitsukazu, 1853 - Terrific portrait of the warrior Onchi Sakon Mitsukazu having just swung his sword at an enemy. His opponent's helmet goes flying at lower left as he draws back his weapon, ready to strike again. He leans forward with an enraged grimace, dressed in black armor except for the plates over his legs which are intricately detailed with lions and blossoms. The plates and lacing of the armor is beautifully detailed in burnishing only. His helmet is topped with a mythical creature with a bird-like beak and scaled wings and tail. A waterfall cascades over the mountain at upper left, and samurai and their spears can be seen in dark silhouette against the night sky on the slope at upper right. A great bold design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small losses at corners, a few small holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
