Comments - Fantastic scene of Oda Nobunaga's last battle at Honno-ji Temple. His loyal retainer Mori Ranmaru balances on the railing of the verandah, attacking the treacherous Akechi Mitsuhide with his spear. One of Nobunaga's generals, Mitsuhide attacked his master while he was resting at Honno-ji in an effort to overthrow him. Nobunaga's men fight valiantly as the general can be seen in silhouette through the shoji window at left, committing suicide. Ranmaru lit the temple on fire to prevent anyone from retrieving Nobunaga's body, red and orange flame flickering dramatically in the background. An incredible composition with beautiful detail, expressive faces touches of burnishing on the armor, and fine bokashi shading. A terrific depiction of this famous duel.
