Toyokuni's Caricatures

Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Genkai Nadaemon, 1859 - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the warrior Genkai Nadaemon, drawing his sword as he looks up with a determined expression, his brows furrowed angrily. He wears a magnificent black kimono patterned with a fierce dragon clutching a sacred jewel in its claws amidst swirling thunderclouds and red flames. His short hair sticks out atop his head, with longer locks pulled back into a low ponytail over his shoulders. A great expressive figure with extremely fine line work in the hair, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono. A handsome terrific design from this rarely seen, late Toyokuni III series. A great choice for a collector.
