Kabuki Warrior - Fantastic shin-hanga kabuki portrait of an actor as a fierce warrior, gripping a wooden post over his shoulder. The character may be Kagekiyo, who is often shown carrying a post as he breaks out of prison, and typically has bold stage makeup and a flared wig to give him an imposing appearance. This striking design features silver mica on the kimono pattern at lower left, the chest plate, and the background, along with burnishing on the flared part of the wig. The top of the hair extends above the edge of the background, giving the figure a sense of emerging from the page. Not much is known about the artist Seifu Matsuda. He contributed kabuki portraits to the short-lived 1915 magazine "Shin Nigao," and later illustrated a book about kabuki wigs. A terrific design and a great choice for a shin-hanga collector or kabuki enthusiast.
