Record of Korean Events, 1885 - Intriguing triptych depicting the Gapsin Coup in Korea of 1884. The Enlightenment Party of Reformers launched a coup to overthrow the Korean King with support from Japan, including the involvement of the Japanese Minister to Korea, Takezoe Shinichiro. The minister is shown at right, gesturing towards a burning palace in the distance, as he bows towards the king, who wipes tears from his eyes with the sleeve of his blue brocade robe. A few of his loyal attendants surround him as they gather among the trees, a full moon glowing in the night sky above. At left, soldiers in black uniforms attack a group of the reformers, one kneeling atop an enemy with his sword raised above his head, each bleeding from several wounds. At left Chinese troops, requested by the queen to intervene, rush forward in clouds of dust and smoke. Nicely detailed. An intriguing subject, seldom seen.
