Priest Refusing to Recognize His Son, 1882

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the priest Doshin during a surprise encounter with his son, Ishidomaru. Doshin was formerly a daimyo who fled his station and title to escape his jealous wife, becoming the priest Karukaya Doshin. His young son tracked him down, wanting to be reunited with his father, but Doshin initially refused to recognize him. Here, the priest grimaces at the boy, his brows furrowed. His head is covered with a light blue cloth, and he wears a gray monk's robe and carries a wooden pail of colorful autumn maple branches. Nice expressive figures with an attractive natural setting.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 14" x 18 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Slight toning. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
