Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Aizuri-e Landscape with Bridge and Mt. Fuji, 1936

Woodblocks from Ukiyoe-Kai Magazine - This interesting group of woodblock prints originally appeared as kuchi-e or frontispiece illustrations for the pre-WWII Japanese magazine "Ukiyoe-Kai." These attractive designs include works by famous shin-hanga artists such as Hasui, Tsuchiya Koitsu, and Noel Nouet. Each is mounted along one edge to a backing sheet with a modern label, including the dates of either Showa 11 (1936) or Showa 12 (1937). Beautifully printed with wonderful attention to detail and fine bokashi shading, these prints are rarely seen, and are a great choice for a shin-hanga collector.

Comments - Unusual aizuri-e or primarily blue view of a busy bridge over a river as the sun sets, a pink glow spreading along the horizon. A willow frames the view as a bat flutters through the sky at left, and Mt. Fuji rises in the distance. A handsome reprint from an interested source.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 4 7/8" x 6 5/8" + margins as shown; backing sheet 5 3/4" x 9 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Mounted along one edge to backing sheet. Slight toning, a few light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
