Yamauba and Kintaro; Ushiwakamaru

Series; A Mirror of Strange Tales from China and Japan, 1880

Yamauba and Kintaro; Ushiwakamaru - Handsome uncut page from Yoshitoshi's rarely seen series "A Mirror of Strange Tales from China and Japan" featuring two chuban images. The top scene shows the young wild boy Kintaro and his mother, Yamauba, who lived on Mt. Ashigara. The boy possessed superhuman strength, and learned to speak with the animals, who were his friends. He appears here sitting atop a deer, smiling up at Yamauba as the breeze blows her hair and robe. Below, the young samurai Ushiwakamaru leaps high as he dodges a blow while fighting, his sword in hand. Ushiwakamaru learned fencing and martial arts from the tengu, mythical winged creatures, and their king Sojobo. A full moon glows yellow in the night sky as the youth hangs weightless in mid-air. Both images are nicely detailed and shaded. This interesting Yoshitoshi series is not well documented. A great choice for a collector.
