A Great Battle from the Taiheiki, 1856

Comments - Great illustration of a battle from "The Taiheiki," the famous chronicle of the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in 14th-century Japan. In the center, a warrior monk on horseback slices through an enemy's pole arm with his sword as he rides. He grimaces as he looks back while a fallen opponent grabs hold of his horse's front leg, trying to stop the animal. A sword flies through the air above as several enemies tumbles backwards onto the ground at right. Fighting continues around him, with warriors rushing forward at left and battling under the trees at right. A lively image with a striking composition and an attractive landscape setting.

Artist - Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with good color and excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small tear at edge, a few holes, repaired. Creasing, slight toning and soiling, a few stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
