Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Spear Bearer Otsu-e

Comments - Interesting portrait of the yakko or spear bearer, one of the standard cast of Otsu-e characters. Otsu-e were traditional folk paintings sold to travelers during the Edo era in Otsu on Lake Biwa near Kyoto. A low-ranking servant, the yakko carries the standard or spear of his lord during a daimyo's procession. He wears a short black jacket with a distinctive crest on the shoulder identifying his rank. Otsu-e figures became popular subjects for woodblock prints. This large format design would make a striking framed display.
