Series; Mirror of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Retainers, Individually, 1857

Mirror of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Retainers, Individually - Kuniyoshi's 1857 series "Mirror of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Retainers, Individually" presents portraits of each of the 47 ronin from the famous drama "Kanadehon Chushingura." The figures are shown primarily in scenes surrounding the night attack on Moronao's mansion, with nicely detailed settings to provide context. The title cartouche at upper right takes the form of a tsuba or hand guard of a sword. An inset at upper left features a landscape or still-life and text on a shaped plaque propped on two metal brackets covered with red cloth at the bottom edge. These handsome Kuniyoshi designs are rarely seen on the market and are a nice complement to his more well-known 47 ronin series.
