The Bloody Fight between Two Brave Warriors at the Great Battle of Shizugatake, 1863

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the 16th century Battle of Shizugatake between Toyotomi Hideyoshi's troops and the supporters of Oda Nobunaga. After a forced march, Hideyoshi and his men arrived to mount a surprise attack on General Sakuma Morimasa, who had attacked Hideyoshi's forts at Shizugatake. Here, two brave warriors fight furiously on horseback, the samurai on the black horse at right thrusting his naginata at his enemy. His personal standard features a deity atop a wild boar. The young warrior in the center raises a sword high above his head with one hand while simultaneously gripping an attacker by his waist sash and tossing him through the air. At left, a samurai prepares to strike the final blow against an opponent who lies struggling on the ground. The battlefield is littered with abandoned weapons and warriors struggling to get out of the way of the dueling horsemen. A bold, early design by Yoshitoshi.
