Onoe Kikugoro as Nikki Danjo, 1868

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Onoe Kikugoro as the evil Nikki Danjo in a scene from a play "Meiboku Sendai Hagi," a drama based on the disputed succession of the Date Clan. Here, Danjo attacks an elderly retainer, pushing him to the floor and raising a knife above his head, ready to stab him. The retainer struggles against his attacker, thrusting a folding fan at his face. Danjo sneers at him angrily, wearing a light gray and white geometric print robe over a suit of armor, the sleeves tied back with a purple sash. A great expressive figure, nicely composed and detailed with soft shading in the background, fine line work in the hair, and embossing on the retainer's white hair.
