Beauties at a Teahouse, 1855

Comments - Charming triptych depicting beauties at a teahouse. In the center, a beauty stands on a stepping stone in the garden with a roll of tissues in hand, smiling as she looks over her shoulder at a women with a letter in her hand. At right, two beauties tilt their heads together as they whisper, another woman peering around the sliding panel of the room behind them. Inside the center room, geisha entertain guests, one woman playing the shamisen while a patron dances about to the amusement of the others present. The silhouettes of courtesans can be seen on the shoji windows, and a flowering cherry tree frames the view overhead. An attractive design, nicely detailed.
