Minamoto no Yoshinaka's Petition at Hachimangu Shrine, 1895

Comments - Fantastic scene of the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshinaka at Hachimangu Shrine writing a petition for divine assistance during an upcoming battle against the Taira during the Genpei War. Yoshinaka had just been defeated at the Battle of Hiuchi, and after asking for divine intervention, went on to win a decisive victory at the Battle of Kurikara in 1183. Here, he sits on camp stool among a grove a trees outside the shrine, watching intently as a retainer writes his request on a sheet of paper. Yoshinaka wears a fine suit of armor and a tall black cap, a quiver of arrows visible at his back. The red torii gate leading to the shrine can be seen beyond the trees at upper left. A bold design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black cap, armor, fur shoes, and stool, and embossing on the retainer's white robe over his shoulders.
