Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Four Kabuki Scenes

Comments - Handsome print featuring four scenes from kabuki plays. The image at lower left depicts the famous tale of the nobleman Fujiwara no Yasumasa, who was walking home one night through the lonely moor of Ichihara, playing the flute. His brother, Hakamadare Yasusuke (Kidomaru) snuck up on him, intent on robbing him of his elegant robe, but enchanted by Yasumasa's beautiful music, he stopped in his tracks. Kidomaru instead followed his brother home, who only then became aware of his presence and happily gave him a robe. Nicely detailed with a faint burnished pattern on Kidomaru's black fur vest, Yasumasa's black court cap, and the black kimono at upper right.
