Prince Genji and Beauties Watching a Performing Monkey circa 1850 - 1848

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji and a group of beauties watching a monkey dressed as a samurai perform. The young nobleman grins happily as he looks over his shoulder, while the monkey dances about wearing a kimono and woven hat, with two miniature swords at his side. At right, a princess kneeling on a cushion giggles into her sleeve as the other women look on with interest. The monkey trainer sits at left, holding a leash and directing the animal with a bamboo pole. A standing screen in the middle of the room features peony blossoms, and at upper left, the room opens onto a view of a stream meandering through a garden. A lovely design with wonderful detail, including embossing on the white kimono trim.
