Prince Genji Arriving for a Visit, 1879

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji and a group of beauties arriving at a home for a visit. He pauses to chat with a kneeling beauty who gestures with her hand, while a princess inside the room bows in greeting, holding her sleeve shyly to her mouth. The garden features a stone lantern and colorful peonies alongside a large pond, with a bridge leading to a small teahouse over the water at upper right, the view framed by blossoming cherry trees. A charming and colorful design, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and embossing on the white kimono trim. We've never before come across this Chikanobu triptych.
