Prince Genji under the Cherry Blossoms at Night, 1860

Comments - Beautiful spring triptych of Prince Genji and a party of beauties enjoying the evening cool in a garden. Genji reclines on a platform in the center, a fan in hand, as a woman approaches carrying a red lacquer sake cup balancing on a container filled with water and tiny floating porcelain cups. On the opposite shore, two beauties holding a young girl by the hand watch koi jumping out of the water. Cherry trees bloom overhead, the delicate pink and white blossoms forming a striking contrast against the dark night sky. A beautiful setting with stone lanterns and structures framing the shore. A terrific image from the classic "Tale of Genji," with lovely detail in the elegant kimono fabrics and soft shading in the water. A lovely choice for display.
