Courtesan Akoya Playing Koto for Shigetada, 1857

Comments - Handsome triptych illustrating a scene from the kabuki play "Dan-no-ura kabuto gunki." The lovely courtesan Akoya, mistress of the warrior Taira Kagekiyo, who escaped following the Battle of Dan-no-ura, was kidnapped for questioning to reveal her lover's whereabouts. The Genji commander Shigetada forced her to play the koto to test her honesty after she said she did not know his location. Her playing was so pure and sincere, that Shigetada realized she was telling the truth. Here, Akoya leans over the instrument with a smile as she plays. At top center, Shigetada listens with a slight frown as he grips his fan. At right, his uncouth retainer Iwanaga slumps over the brazier in a bored manner, staring at the coals with a distraught expression. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke I as Akoya, Ichikawa Ichizo III as Shigetada, and Ichikawa Danzo VI as Iwanaga. An attractive design from this popular play, with a nicely detailed setting.
