Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestlers Shiranui and Kimenzan, Referee Shikimori Inosuke, and Judge Tamagaki, 1857

Comments - Terrific depiction of a sumo wrestling match with opponents grappling in the ring. At right, the wrestler Shiranui reaches around his opponent Kimenzan's torso as Kimenzan takes hold of the back of his belt. At right, the referee Shikimori Inosuke watches closely, holding a fan, while the judge Tamagaki sits on a cushion at left, his arms folded across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his kimono. A bold composition with the large figures dominating the scene. A great subject for a collector interested in this ancient Japanese sport.

Image Size - 14" x 29 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail and shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and stains, slight curling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
