Five Street Knights in Matching Kimono and Pants, 1861

A rare Edo era triptych

Five Street Knights in Matching Kimono and Pants, 1861 - Handsome kabuki scene of five otokodate or street knights on an evening stroll with a beauty. They wear matching blue and white kimono patterned with writing and tucked into colorful checked pants, holding either a pipe or a folding fan. At right, the beauty wears a similar kimono tied with a checked obi that matches the men's pants. She looks over her shoulder with a sly smile, watching her companions out of the corners of her eyes. The men react with confusion, exchanging worried frowns, while one man scratched his head in a puzzled manner. Above, a row of lanterns featuring different crests hangs in a black lacquer frame surrounded with blossoming plum branches. An attractive and unusual design we haven't come across before.
