Committing Suicide, 1852

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a man committing suicide in a graveyard, still thrusting his sword into his bleeding belly. His face is shaded blue, a sign of his impending death, and he holds out a bloody hand in a stopping motion as a samurai discovers him, holding up a lantern. The man wears a white kimono with writing on it, his face an expression of pain and sorrow. The samurai watches him warily out of the corners of his eyes. Behind him, wooden grave markers stick up crookedly from the foliage, and stone markers feature writing on them. From left, the actors are Bando Takesaburo I and Bando Hikosaburo IV. A poignant image, nicely detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
