Hanamurasaki and the False Genji, 1857

Comments - Attractive scene from the story "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" (A False Murasaki and a Country Genji), a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji. Here, the young nobleman stands outside a room next to a shoji panel, grinning as he eavesdrops. Inside a young girl gestures towards the surprise visitor. In the center, several beauties are composing poem slips, one looking down with a dreamy expression as she rests her chin on her palm, a brush in hand. The room overlooks the water, where fishing boats can be seen with red flames rising from their fire baskets suspended over the water. Beautiful detail in the elegant fabrics and setting, which includes an alcove at upper right with a scroll and a flower arrangement.
