Kagekiyo and Kunitoshi at the Battle of Yashima, 1893

Comments - Fantastic depiction of a famous incident from the Battle of Yashima between Minamoto and Taira forces. At right, the Taira general Akushichibyoe Kagekiyo has ripped the neck-covering (shikoro) from the armor of his enemy, Minamoto Miyo no Yashiro Kunitoshi, an episode known as the "shikoro biki" (shikoro pulling). Kunitoshi leans forward still gripping his broken sword, pieces of the blade lying on the beach beside him. Kagekiyo strikes a bold pose, the armor plate in one hand and his naginata in the other. Pine trees frame a view of the ocean with samurai ships at left. A dynamic design, beautifully composed, with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
