Prisoner Shirai Gonpachi Escaping, 1862

Comments - Dramatic kabuki depiction of the notorious robber and murderer escaping from an enclosed palanquin covered with netting. In the center, he forces one guard to the ground while tossing another head over heels through the night sky. At right, a samurai raises an iron truncheon to attack the prisoner, while another fellow at left readies a length of rope to bind him captive. The scene takes place in the forest at night among the trunks of pine trees. Ichimura Uzaemon appears as Shirai Gonpachi and Nakamura Shikan plays the samurai at right. A lively image with a handsome natural setting.
